How to sculpt a TREX
Below is a quick How To on how I sculpted this Trex cake for my sons 4th birthday party.
If at all possible, I like to have a physical reference. Since dinosaurs have been extinct for some time, a little plastic toy did the trick. Because I already have experience on how to create a solid structure, I sketched out my TRex and outlined the areas where all the support dowels and pipes would go.
After creating my structure, I start adding more features like the head and tail. Once it looks good, I add on the food safe materials.
Now the fun part, adding on the “muscle” and “meat” on the bones! I used homemade Rice Krispies treat (RKT) and coated it in melted chocolate. I try to use as much RKT as possible because it weighs less than straight up modeling chocolate or fondant. You can start seeing some of the muscle features appearing on the cake. You might notice I used plastic wrap to hold together the RKT on the back end. I do this until the RKT has set in place.
I absolutely LOVE this tail! Cake board and top body is ready for the cake! At this point, this cake is ready to be set aside and just wait until it’s closer to party time. Being that this was made for my son’s birthday, I had a lot of other things to plan and set up.
Time for cake! Stacked and cut homemade Funfetti cake is applied at this time. Buttercream is added at the top layer, like all my cakes are done before adding fondant. I was comfortable using different shades of purple, because my plan was to spray paint the entire cake. I realized later, it takes a lot of shading to cover it up. I really wanted to use older fondant to clear out my buckets of random shades.
Last thing before final additions was to spray paint! I have been getting more confident in that area! especially after getting my spray painting booth from Cake Safe (www.cakesafe.com). Nice looking mouth, am I right?!
Here it is!…….
